"We're Not Dead! We're Not Dead!"
I've been a terrible blogger lately, although I have a good excuse. No, my dog didn't eat my homework. In the last seven months, I've been in five hospitals in three states. My harrowing health care story is coming, but for the time being, I can summarize it in one word: disastrous. It started with an intestinal infection that was wrongly diagnosed as colon cancer, and while doctors were trying to pressure me into authorizing what we now know would have been a foolishly risky and unnecessary surgery, the infection festered until I became so septic that my kidneys shut down and I had to go back on dialysis.
In the midst of this, one of the hospitals I was in confined me to bed unnecessarily, resulting in a bed sore on my butt that went all the way down to the bone and resulted in a bone infection. Between the nasty intestinal bug called C-diff, the return of my kidney problems and the bone infection, from November to March, I was really sick and at times possibly near death.
I'm on the comeback trail now, but my kidney function still hasn't bounced back, so I'm still dealing with dialysis, with sucks so much, psychologically as much as physically, that I daily contemplate stopping it, which, at this point would likely mean I would die pretty quick. On top of that, I have Medicare, but nonetheless I have a stack of medical bills literally four inches high. Medicare is NOT free. I'm facing a real financial crisis if I can't find a way to generate more income. A more detailed account of my recent medical and economic adventures will be forthcoming.
In the meantime, I'm recommitting to being a productive writer, but I need your help. I'm not talking to anyone else. If you're reading this, I'm talking to YOU! How can you help?
Why do I want to be a writer? I love to read. Books have inspired me and motivated me, enlightened and uplifted me. Movies have as well, and movies must be written, too. I write for my audience, in hopes that I can give to others what books and movies have given me. But if my audience is not engaged, I feel like my writing is meaningless and I cannot motivate myself to go on.
